Israeli fire kills five in Gaza, including a boy, as West Bank raids net dozens

Chapeau (Extrait) :

Israeli strikes and gunfire killed five Palestinians across the Gaza Strip on Thursday, November 5, including a 12-year-old boy, according to Gaza’s civil defence agency and hospitals cited by AFP and Al Jazeera, while Israeli forces detained dozens of people in overnight raids in the occupied West Bank.

Deaths in central and southern Gaza

Mahmoud Bassal, spokesman for Gaza’s civil defence agency, told AFP that the boy was shot dead by Israeli gunfire east of the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza. A source at al-Awda Hospital told Al Jazeera that a child had been killed in Bureij by Israeli fire.

Two more people were killed in separate Israeli strikes near the town of al-Zawayda, a few kilometres away, Bassal said. Medical sources at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir el-Balah identified one of them as Abdul Rahim Walid Matar, 27, who Al Jazeera said was killed at dawn when a drone fired on a tent sheltering displaced people west of al-Zawayda.

In the south, a woman was killed by Israeli gunfire near Khan Younis, according to the civil defence agency and Nasser Hospital. Later in the day, Bassal said one person was killed and several others wounded in a drone strike west of Gaza City, bringing the day’s toll to five, a figure also reported by Al Jazeera’s Arabic service citing medical sources.

Israeli military response

Asked by AFP, the Israeli military said it had “struck Hamas terrorists” in the al-Zawayda area and was “looking into” reports about the woman killed near Khan Younis. It gave no further details on the other incidents.

Israel and Hamas regularly accuse each other of breaching the ceasefire that took effect in October 2025 after two years of war. Al Jazeera reported continued artillery fire on eastern Gaza City on Thursday, and residents east of Khan Younis described explosions as the army demolished buildings in areas under its control.

A rising toll since the truce

Gaza’s health ministry, which operates under Hamas authority and whose figures the United Nations considers reliable, said on Wednesday that 1,602 Palestinians had been killed and 5,794 wounded since the ceasefire began. It puts the overall toll since October 2023 at 74,618 dead and 175,920 wounded.

The Hamas-run government media office in Gaza said on Monday it had recorded 5,989 Israeli violations of the truce since it took effect, including 753 in October alone. Israel has not commented on that tally.

Arrest campaigns in the West Bank

In the occupied West Bank, Israeli forces detained about 30 Palestinians during a dawn raid on Thursday on the Dheisheh refugee camp south of Bethlehem, according to Anadolu, citing the Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office, and Al Jazeera, citing the Palestinian news agency WAFA. Troops searched homes in the camp, and Anadolu reported that those held were released after field interrogation. Five other people were detained in the Qalqilya, Nablus and Hebron areas, the office said.

The raids followed a wider operation on Wednesday in which at least 45 Palestinians, including five women and two journalists, were detained across the territory, according to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society, as reported by Anadolu and Asharq Al-Awsat. Most of those arrests took place in Nablus and Hebron, with others in Qalqilya, Tulkarem and Bethlehem, while troops carried out on-the-spot questioning in Jenin.

The society says it has recorded more than 26,000 arrests in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, since October 2023. The Israeli military did not publicly comment on the latest detentions.
