Kenya investigating cybersecurity incident affecting president’s website

Kenya is investigating a cybersecurity incident that disrupted the official website of President William Ruto. The government said there is currently no evidence that sensitive data was accessed, stolen, or lost.

According to Kenya's Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy:

  • The incident was detected by the government's ICT Authority, which immediately activated cybersecurity response protocols.
  • Access to the presidential website was temporarily restricted to contain the incident and allow forensic investigations.
  • Authorities have implemented mitigation measures and are working to restore the website.
  • Government officials emphasized that other government systems and digital services remain secure and operational.

Some media outlets reported that the website was briefly defaced, with attackers replacing the homepage with unauthorized messages and a Bitcoin ransom demand before the site was taken offline. However, the Kenyan government has not confirmed that any confidential information was compromised.

The ICT Authority is now working with other government agencies and technical partners to conduct a forensic investigation to determine:

  • How the attackers gained access.
  • Whether any systems beyond the website were affected.
  • Who was responsible for the incident.
