Trump says NATO’s refusal to help on Iran is “very foolish mistake”

President Donald Trump sharply criticized NATO allies for declining to participate in U.S.-led operations against Iran, calling their refusal a “very foolish mistake.” Speaking from the White House during a meeting with the Irish Prime Minister, Trump expressed frustration that most NATO members had indicated they did not want to be directly involved, despite supporting the general objectives of the campaign.

The U.S. president specifically pointed to the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime route through which a significant portion of the world’s oil passes, as a point of concern. Iran’s use of missiles, drones, and mines has disrupted shipping in the area, and Trump argued that NATO’s reluctance to assist in securing it was a strategic error.

While emphasizing that the United States “does not need” NATO’s help due to recent military successes, Trump highlighted cooperation with non-NATO partners such as Japan, Australia, and South Korea. European allies have largely avoided direct military involvement, citing NATO’s defensive mandate and the risk of escalating the conflict, though some have offered logistical and humanitarian support.

Trump’s remarks highlight growing tensions between the United States and its traditional allies, as Washington urges broader contributions to its strategy on Iran while key NATO members maintain a cautious stance.
