Israel ‘lying’ about famine in Gaza: Geldof

Bob Geldof has accused Israeli authorities of "lying" about the famine in Gaza, following statements from Israeli officials denying responsibility for the humanitarian crisis. Appearing on Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips, Geldof stated that approximately 1,000 individuals, including children, have died of starvation in Gaza this month. He criticized Israeli spokesperson David Mencer's claim that "Hamas starves its own people," labeling it as false and asserting that the Israeli government is misleading the public about the situation.

Geldof emphasized the severity of the crisis, describing the actions of the Israeli government as a "despicable disgrace" and "unconscionable," especially considering Israel's own history. He expressed disbelief that such actions could be permitted, referencing his work with Holocaust survivors through the Aegis Trust. He suggested that if these survivors were alive today, they would feel "shame" over the current situation in Gaza.

In addition to his criticisms, Geldof called on Israeli citizens to take action, urging them to "get in your cars, stuff your cars full of food, drive through that border and let your own army stop you." He also condemned Hamas for its role in the conflict but emphasized that the current humanitarian crisis goes beyond the initial attacks by Hamas in October 2023.

His remarks have sparked debate, with some supporting his call for accountability, while others argue that the situation is more complex and involves multiple parties. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, with ongoing discussions about how to address the humanitarian needs in Gaza.
