US organization scraps Palestine issue of Journal of Architectural Education, fires executive editor

The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) has canceled the planned Fall 2025 issue of the Journal of Architectural Education (JAE), which was to focus on Palestine. The ACSA board cited "substantial risks" at personal and editorial levels, including threats to editors, authors, and reviewers, as well as legal and financial concerns, as reasons for this decision.

In conjunction with this decision, the ACSA terminated McLain Clutter, the journal's interim executive editor, who had served since 2022. Clutter opposed the cancellation and refused to assist in editing a replacement issue. He expressed disappointment, stating that the board's actions violated principles of academic freedom and ethical scholarship.

The planned issue aimed to address the "ongoing Israeli genocidal campaign against Palestinians in Gaza" and its implications for architectural design, research, and education. The abrupt cancellation has sparked criticism, with some viewing it as a suppression of discourse on Palestinian issues within academic circles.

The ACSA has announced that the Fall 2025 issue will proceed with a different theme and is reevaluating its approach to the journal amid changing legal and political landscapes affecting higher education and nonprofit organizations.
